About Chuck Carder

Premiere Solo Show at Christophe Artisan Chocolatier, Charleston, SC, February 22, 2013 "Fusing Illusion with Reality" curated by Trever Webster.

Nicolas de Stael (1950s) said "A painting should be both abstract and figurative, abstract to the extent that it is flat, figurative to the extent that it is a representation of space." 2oth century modern art began with the post impressionists-Fauves (wild beasts) in Southern France 1904-1908 . The leaders of this movement, Matisse, Derain, and Vlaminck emphasized the intense bold use of color juxtaposed for expression and simplified details to achieve overall picture balance and harmony.  A sky could be orange, a tree red, a face blue resulting in an abstraction of perception.  Fauvism proved to be an important step towards cubism and expressionism and future modes of abstraction.  My art is a throw back to this early modern art style fusing Illusion with reality.   A painting should be a metaphor of reality-a shared experience-not a photograph.  My art in a word is stylistic.   Landscapes, city-scapes and collages in acrylic are magical, happy, colorful and boldly painted.

I Studied Art History and Studio Art including four years of painting at the College of Charleston, and have been painting since 2010.  Before, I was an advertising executive for Reader's Digest and Time Inc working in New York and Los Angeles.  I also sold photos through a stock photo agency.  Many of my ideas come from pictures of my travels around the world.  Today, I live and paint in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina.  Contact: ccarder@comcast.net--843 469 2311.
